Ronald M. Epstein, MD
Dr. Ron Epstein, a board-certified practicing family physician, is professor of family medicine, psychiatry, and oncology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He serves as director of the Rochester Center to Improve Communication in Health Care and as director of the Dean’s Teaching Fellowship Program.
Dr. Epstein’s studies have added to our understanding of the impact of patient-physician relationships on health and health care costs, management of ambiguity in the clinical practice, and the effect of patient requests on clinical care.
His over 120 peer-reviewed publication have outlined the habits of mind of master clinicians, and include influential papers on mindful practice.
He has developed innovative educational programs in mindful practice, communication skills, the patient-physician relationship, physician self-awareness, and assessment of professional competence, including peer assessments.

He is also the author of a new monograph, Patient-Centered Communication in Cancer Care (National Cancer Institute, 2007).
Dr. Epstein graduated from Wesleyan University and Harvard Medical School. He was named the first George Engel and John Romano Dean’s Teaching Scholar at the University of Rochester, and received the Lynn Payer Award from the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare. He has been a Fulbright scholar and visiting professor at numerous medical schools worldwide and a keynote speaker at more than 30 national and international conferences.
